Thank God for Dave Bautista though, the guy is a treasure. Fun, but we can all do better. this is frequently funny and bautista is growing into a genuinely special performer; while the rock has gone full instagram branded gym bro content actor here is a dude with a physicality just as absurd willing to use it to play wounded and silly. however the ~toxic masculinity~ angle of this felt really performative and undercooked to me and the action is unforgivable. what's even the point in hiring iko uwais if you're gonna shoot some shaky close-ups and cut them to shit? for the love of god just hire a stunt guy to 2nd-unit ghost direct the fights or something. If you're going to make a dogshit pseudo-comedy that doubles as a 90-minute piece of sponsored content for a predatory hell app, is it too much to ask for said hell app to be accurately depicted? It wasn't as funny as I thought it was going to be. It still made me laugh though. It had some heartfelt moments also. The big problem is that he has just had lazer eye surgery and can't see as well as making a promise to go to his daughters art opening. The movie focuses on the banter in between the 2 as well as solving the case. Both are well cast but this movie didn't need to be as violent as it was and it should have been funnier.
